Family of 83 year old Grandfather killed by drunk driver get six figure settlement
The grandfather was killed in a car collision in Longniddry, East Lothian in August 2009. A drunk driver pulled out in front of the car he was a passenger in on the A198 North Berwick Road, casing abdominal injuries, which lead to his death in hospital, two days later.
The drunken driver that killed him, Peter Marchan, admitted causing the death and being unfit to drive through drink or drugs. Marchan was sentenced to 2 years and 3 months and banned from driving. He expressed sorry for the damage he caused.
The grandfather was said to be an energetic man who enjoyed his garden and relationships with his wife, sons and grandchildren. The sudden death came as a massive blow to the family and sadly, there was more tragedy to come. Just 20 days after the incident, the man’s wife of 40 years, whom he cared for full time, died from a stroke.
David Bell, who is representing the man’s family, negotiated a six figure settlement for the various members of the family. The close relationship that each family member had with him was an important consideration in the final sum agreed.
